Movement Marketing for Small Businesses

A practical way to grow customer loyalty, repeat business and referrals without increasing spend.

This self-paced online course shows founders and small marketing teams how to build shared belief, stronger engagement and a repeatable 30-day activation plan they can run in their own organisation.

For Small Businesses

Turn your values into customers
who return and refer.

Most marketing campaigns spike, then stop. Movements compound.

If your marketing stops working the moment you pause the budget, you do not have reliable customers yet - you have short-term reach. Customers are overwhelmed by campaigns that interrupt rather than invite and replacing one-off buyers is expensive. Movement marketing helps small businesses turn their values into marketing that brings the right customers back more often and encourages referrals without increasing spend.

Built for small teams that need results, not more complexity.

This course gives SME owners and in-house teams the practical mechanics to build a sustainable growth system.

It is designed for teams of one to three people who want better return on spend, repeat business and more referrals without relying on an agency.

  • Customer churn is high and re-acquisition costs are eating your margin
  • You need to show clear return on marketing spend without hiring an agency
  • Your marketing stops the moment you stop paying for it
  • There is no repeat engagement system and customers buy once, then disappear
  • ROI and marketing performance are hard to evidence to leadership or the board

What you will walk away with.

A practical 30-day movement marketing plan your team can deploy without an agency. You finish with a clear Movement Story, a Customer Journey Map from first contact to advocate, a focused content and channel plan and a KPI dashboard that makes sales growth and customer retention measurable.

The Case For Retention

What keeping your customers is actually worth.

Imagine 1,000 customers buy from you this year and you do not add any new ones. Drag the slider and watch what your annual retention rate does to your customer base.

40%100%

DTC ecommerce averages ~31% annual retention; the very top sits near ~75%. Most SMEs sit between.

At 70% retention you keep 343 customers after three years. At 60% you would have 216. Same starting point. Same marketing spend.

Year 1 start 1,000 customers
End of Year 1 700 still buying
End of Year 2 490 still buying
End of Year 3 343 still buying

Every customer you keep is someone who buys again, spends more over time, recommends you to a colleague or turns up already warm when you launch something new. You are not saving one sale. You are protecting a revenue stream that compounds quietly in the background while your competitors keep pouring budget into finding people who have never heard of them.

That is the case for investing in customer loyalty rather than acquisition. And that is exactly the kind of behaviour movement marketing is designed to create.

General questions

What is movement marketing?

Movement marketing is organising people around a shared belief and giving them a clear role and a simple action to take. Growth comes from people getting involved, feeling like they belong and telling others, not just from ads or one-off appeals. Unlike a traditional campaign that ends on a deadline, a movement keeps going because the people in it keep it alive.

Who is this course for?

Charities and small businesses with small teams who feel stuck in a cycle of constant reacquisition. For charities: heads of fundraising, comms officers, heads of partnerships and CEOs, especially teams of one to three. For SMEs: marketing managers, heads of sales and founders who are caught on a paid-ads treadmill and want a repeatable system that builds loyalty and referrals instead.

How does it lower costs?

When supporters and customers become advocates who bring others in, you rely less on paid advertising and cold outreach. McKinsey research shows this kind of approach can reduce acquisition costs by up to 50% and lift revenues by 5 to 15%.

Do we need every platform?

No. The course teaches you to focus on one or two channels you can genuinely sustain rather than being everywhere and doing everything badly. Focus beats omnipresence every time.

Is this just purpose marketing?

No. Purpose marketing usually stops at a message and cause marketing can feel transactional. Movement marketing goes further by adding participation loops so people keep taking action and coming back over time. The goal is real community and advocacy rather than just making a bold claim.

Will this replace my marketing?

No. Movement marketing works alongside your existing marketing, not instead of it. You keep your positioning, channels, campaigns and funnels and layer movement mechanics on top, so your existing work starts to compound over time instead of resetting every quarter.

What is a movement moment?

A focused 30-day campaign that sits inside your longer ongoing movement. It creates a spike of participation and sharing, but with loops built in so engagement carries on after the moment ends. Think of it as a campaign within a movement.

How long does the course take?

Roughly eight to ten hours across four self-paced modules, with worksheets you can apply from the first hour. Module 1 alone takes about two hours and gives you a KPI Baseline Tracker you can put in front of your board straight away. Because you have lifetime access, you can go faster or slower without losing progress.

For businesses

How does it lower customer cost?

When your customers become advocates who bring others in, your community becomes a distribution engine. You need less paid reach to hit the same results because more growth comes from repeat behaviour and referrals rather than cold campaigns.

What role do our staff play?

They are your first community. If your employees do not believe what you are saying or cannot repeat your story, your movement loses credibility before it reaches anyone externally. The course teaches internal alignment first.

Does this work for any product?

Yes. The mechanics, shared belief, proof, participation and community loops, work across sectors. The course includes examples from global brands, SMEs and charities so you can see the same principles at very different scales and apply them to your own context.

How fast will I see results?

Early signals such as repeat behaviour, referrals and community growth typically show within the first 30-day campaign you run from the course. Compounding revenue impact builds over the following quarters as your customer base retains and refers more. Bain and Wharton research suggests even small lifts in retention can drive 25 to 95% profit growth and 16 to 25% higher lifetime value, so the longer you run the system, the bigger the gap with your competitors becomes.

What makes this different

Why is this course unique?

It is built on 75 years of combined experience from practitioners who have run real movements with real clients. Proof, not theory. Every principle is transferable, from blue-chip corporations to one-person teams. Playbooks drawn from a global energy company operating across 75 countries, a national museum group welcoming 2 million visitors across 70 plus venues, Alderney Tourism (35% visitor growth) and East Anglian Air Ambulance and Busseys (£2,250 raised from 75 test drives in a single weekend). Designed for small teams, with an Authenticity Fit Check and ethics lens in every module, lifetime access and full accessibility.

What real results have you delivered?

Alderney Tourism delivered 35% visitor growth on reduced budgets. EAAA and Busseys Ford raised £2,250 and recruited a new volunteer from a single weekend test-drive event. Smartflow Finance grew from £8 million to £28 million in under three years. A national museum programme reached more than two million visitors across 70 plus venues in under a year, with 55% of visits unplanned.
